The folks over at the ANSL were able to discuss some of the competitive news of NS and future news of NS2 with Flayra. Here is a little taste of what was discussed:

9) What's in the cards as far as NS2 goes? Will we be seeing more of a smaller games (<18 player) focus like NS, or will the game be expanding to encompass more players? How much larger in scope will NS2 be compared to NS?

I see why people are confused on this one. A long time ago, we had big plans for NS2 but now we're making something smaller and closer to NS. So NS2 will be sticking to the gritty close-quarters feel of NS, not reinventing that part of it. Maybe we can get to the dropship/planetary level for NS3.
